Seattle Soccer News: Forward Clint Dempsey Suspended For 3 Games Before Gold Cup

Seattle soccer forward, Clint Dempsey, has been suspended for three games by Major League Soccer. He was also fined for his conduct toward a match official during a US Open Cup match a few days ago.

Dempsey, who is the captain of the United States soccer team, will finish serving his penalty before the Americans begin to defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup title next month.

Dempsey received the punishment after engaging in a confrontation with a referee on Tuesday in the Sounders' fourth round loss to their rival, Portland.

He grabbed a notebook from the official and tore it apart after one of his teammates was given a red card.

Dempsey could face even more discipline for his actions from a panel which would be established by the United States Soccer Federation, but any other suspension he may receive will be limited to the United States Open Cup matches.

He will be missing league games against San Jose, Philadelphia and Portland. The Major League Soccer Deputy Commissioner, Mark Abbott, released a statement about the matter.

"We do not tolerate conduct of this nature from any of our players," said Abbott. "No matter how passionate our players are or what happens in the 'heat of the moment' they must always respect all aspects of the game, especially the referees. In light of Clint's actions and our past precedents, we felt that a significant suspension was appropriate."

Many are surprised by the length of suspension, as there was discussion of Dempsey being suspended for up to three months, according to Joe Prince-Wright of Pro Soccer Talk.
