Seahawks NFL 2015 News: Franchise Signs QB Russell Wilson to $87.6M Deal

The Seattle Seahawks made quarterback Russell Wilson the second-highest paid player in the NFL after signing the two-time Super Bowl quarterback to a four-year extension worth $87.6 million.

As reported by MMQB, the deal includes a $31 million signing bonus and approximately $60 million in guarantees.

Wilson was the 75th player picked in the 2012 draft and was due to make $1.54 in the final year of his four-year, $3 million rookie contract. As noted by MMQB, the deal now puts him ahead, salary-wise, of Ben Roethlisberger ($21.85 million a year on average), Cam Newton ($20.76 million) and Matt Ryan ($20.75).

In his three years with the Seahawks, Wilson has steered the team to a 42-14 record and two trips to the Super Bowl. Before he was drafted, Seattle just managed a 20-30 record. MMQB also points out that the three years before Wilson's arrival in Seattle, the Seahawks' passers had a 75.5 rating. Wilson's passer rating over his three-year career is 98.6.

Before the deal was made, Wilson's camp and the Seahawks got close to what MMQB calls "the edge of a contractual cliff," and began to consider a future without their 26-yeard-old quarterback. But that potential scenario was avoided with John Schneider and Wilson's agent Mark Rodgers beating the 1 p.m. ET deadline.

With the deal in place, Wilson is currently the second-highest paid player in the league behind Aaron Rodgers, who signed a five-year, $110 million deal two years ago.

As noted by MMQB, the Rodgers deal actually became a stumbling block during the negotiations between Wilson and the Seahawks because that contract was signed 27 months ago when the salary cap was 17 percent less than what it is now. And with the cap likely to increase potentially up to $10 million, Wilson's agent argued that his client's deal should be in the same range as Rodgers' deal.
