Scarlett Johansson New Movies 2015 News: Actress to Star in 'Ghost In The Shell' Adaptation

Scarlett Johansson has recently landed a lead role in a new Dreamwork's adaptation to the classic 1995 anime film, 'Ghost In The Shell'.

Following her success in her recent action roles, she came to be the perfect candidate to star as the main character in this sci-fi thriller.

"Hollywood has a pathetic history of making action films with female leads, but it's also known to emulate recent successes. With Johansson's financial and creative hits Lucy and Under the Skin receiving acclaim - not to mention her role in Marvel blockbusters like The Avengers and Captain America: Winter Soldier - her talent and celebrity could be what's necessary to finally get the film made," writes The Verge.

While the actress had been offered the role in the past, she has only recently accepted the part in the project.

For those that are unfamiliar with the 1995 anime film, IMDb supplied a brief plot synopsis: "The year is 2029. The world has become intensively information oriented and humans are well-connected to the network. Crime has developed into a sophisticated stage by hacking into the interactive network. To prevent this, Section 9 is formed. These are cyborgs with incredible strengths and abilities that can access any network on Earth."

How Dreamworks hopes to adapt the Japanese film, or what role Scarlet Johansson will play, is still up for speculation. It is presumed she will portray the main character, Motoko Kusanaigi, but expected she won't share the same name.

According to Variety, Steven Spielberg is a big fan of the original and has wanted to see the film adapted for a long time now. Johansson's commitment to the film is what he believed it needed to get off the ground.

"Besides Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence, Johansson is becoming one of the few actresses in town with the clout to get a project greenlit on her name alone," writes Variety.
