Sandra Lee Breast Cancer Update: Celebrity Chef Recovers from Double Mastectomy Surgery
Sandra Lee, lifestyle guru and girlfriend of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, underwent a double mastectomy earlier this week. According to New York Governor Cuomo, the surgery went "as well as can be expected."
In a statement, Governor Cuomo said, "Around 8am this morning, Sandy underwent surgery that concluded just before 1 pm."
"I am happy to report that she is doing as well as can be expected and has begun the post surgery recovery process," stated Governor Cuomo. Lee publicly announced her breast cancer diagnosis on Good Morning America one week ago.
On the show, Lee discussed her reaction to hearing her potentially fatal diagnosis. "I just was still," recalled Lee. "I didn't even cry, I was stunned. And that's how fast life turns, it turns on a dime."
According to Lee, who is 48-years-old, a lumpectomy did not give clean margins, so she consulted several physicians in order to determine whether she should have one or both of her breasts removed.
Her radiologist and doctor both agreed that she was a "ticking time bomb", and suggested that she should have a double mastectomy.
Lee was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ DCIS, which is the most common, non invasive form of breast cancer.
Although it is not often life threatening, it does require treatment and places a person at a higher risk of developing a cancer that is invasive and can spread into the breast tissue.
In his statement, Governor Cuomo thanks everyone for their support and prayers during this difficult time.
