San Francisco 49ers NFL 2015 News: Justin Smith is Calling it a Career and Retires
San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith is calling it a career after 14 seasons in the NFL, the team announced Monday.
As noted by Sam Cooper of Shutdown Corner, the 35-year-old was twice named All-Pro, and made appearances in the Pro Bowl five times"”all of which as a member of the 49ers. Smith was drafted fourth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2001, and spent seven seasons with the team before making his move to San Francisco.
During his career that spanned a total of 221 games, Smith totaled 880 tackles, and 87 sacks. He was a consistent threat on the defensive end, harassing teams into 16 forced fumbles, three interceptions, along with 30 passes defended. As pointed out by the Shutdown Corner, the defensive lineman recorded at least five sacks in 12 of his 14 years in the NFL. In his rookie year, he set a career mark with 8.5, and matched that number in 2010.
"Justin is the consummate professional whose impact on this organization can never be measured by statistics alone. His durability, competitiveness, work ethic, strength, and rare stamina helped set him part over his 14-year career. Cowboy will go down as one of the best to ever wear a 49ers uniform and his candidness, work ethic and pure passion for the game will be missed. We wish the very best for him and his family," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said of the player who started 185 consecutive games starting from his rookie year in 2001 to the end of 2012.
It has been a rough offseason for the 49ers defense that has seen three of its players retire. Linebacker Patrick Willis announced his retirement last March, and Chris Borland followed suit for fears of head injuries after just one season in the league.
"Tough. Physical. Durable. Hard-working. Dedicated. Selfless. Justin embodies each of those qualities and brought even more with him to work each and everyday," 49ers CEO Jed York said in a release.
