Samsung Unveils Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+ News: South Korean Tech Giant Aims to Revive Fortunes [VIDEO]

Following the dismal sales of its current flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S5 Edge, Samsung is now seeking to revive the fortunes of its mobile division with the launch of two new phablets, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. The last two devices were unveiled at the company's "Unpacked" media event held at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, New York, on Thursday.

According to a report in IB Times, the design of both Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ has been inspired by that of the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, replete with their glass and metal edge construction.

The Galaxy Note 5 packs an Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core chip, 4 GB of RAM and a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560x1440 pixels) Super AMOLED display. In addition, the device is equipped with a 3,000 mAh battery unit and an S-Pen stylus stored in a click-to-eject slot at bottom right corner. On the other hand, the curved smartphone of the company - the S6 Edge+ - also sports almost identical specs. However, it also differs from the Note 5 as it comes with a dual-edge curved display, but does not include an S-Pen.

A statement issued by Samsung Electronics CEO and President, IT and Mobile Division, J. K. Shin reads, "At Samsung, we believed in the promise that big screen smartphones could actively address some major consumers' pain points by providing users with a better viewing experience and more productivity on-the-go." The statement adds, "With the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5, we're reemphasizing our commitment to bold, fearless innovation that meets the needs of our consumers."

Both the Note 5 and the S6 Edge+ also sport 16-megapixel primary cameras with an optical image stabilizer alongside 5-megapixel front-facing snappers. The cameras of these devices have the capability to film in 4K as well as broadcast in full HD to contacts or the public via YouTube.

The batteries of both the devices are not removable, but they support fast and wireless charging. However, customers must purchase a separate accessory to use the wireless charging feature.

In addition, the two phablets feature near-field communication (NFC) and magnetic secure transmission (MST), which will be used for Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay software will be preloaded on Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5 devices. Samsung Pay will be officially launched in South Korea on Aug. 20, followed by a U.S. launch on Sept. 28. The service will later be expanded to the U.K., Spain and China.

While the Note 5 and the S6 Edge+ have incorporated a couple new features, they also lost a few. Both devices do not feature the SD slot for expandable storage, thereby leaving customers with choices of 32 GB and 64 GB models.
