Samsung’s‘Turtle Glass’ News: Innovation to Challenge Corning Gorilla Glass? Company Developing Foldable Smartphone [VIDEO]
If South Korean trademark filings are to be believed, Samsung may be working to develop its own scratch and shatter resistance glass cover, currently dubbed 'Turtle Glass.'
According to IB Times, the material being developed by the South Korean tech giant may be used as a substitute for Corning's Gorilla Glass for cover displays in smartphones and tablets. Samsung has already used Gorilla Glass in its flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S6 and also in the Galaxy Note 5. Turtle Glass, however, can be used beyond smartphone displays. The application filed by Samsung's display arm claims that the Turtle Glass trademark can also be used for other products of the company - tablets, monitors, camera, MP3 player and also its flat panel TV screens.
Incidentally, this is not the first time that the South Korean tech giant has considered to reduce its dependence on third-party suppliers. For instance, Samsung replaced Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors with is proprietary Exynos octacors chips in the latest Galaxy smartphones. Nevertheless, Samsung may return to Qualcomm's chips for its next flagship - the purported Galaxy S7.
Aside from Turtle Glass, Samsung is also reported to be developing a smartphone with a foldable display, which as been code named Project Valley. According to GforGames, the new foldable device may be launched in January 2016. Earlier, during the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Expo in Las Vegas, Samsung had presented a demo of a concept phone using a flexible and foldable OLED display. However, very little details about the foldable smartphone are available at this point. However, SamMobile reported that the device will pack Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 chip, come with 3GB of RAM and a microSD expandable storage slot.
According to IB Times, the move by Samsung to develop a new protective glass and foldable smartphone comes after several quarters of declining smartphone sales as the company faces increased competition from Apple Inc. as well as the spirited Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi.
Although Samsung has filed for the Turtle Glass trademark, as of now, it is not known if or when it plans to bring the new glass technology to market.
