Samsung Orbis Release Date, Specs Rumors: Smartwatch with Rotating Bezel Unveiled at MWC 2015?
Samsung is still on the quest for the best smartwatch and its upcoming effort, codenamed Orbis, is said to be coming with a unique bezel that is used to control the watch's user interface.
Previous news already stated that the Orbis will be running with the Samsung's Tizen operating system, following after the Gear S and the upcoming Tizen smartphone. However, new reports are coming in about an exciting new feature that interested consumers can look forward to.
The news was confirmed by sources to Sam Mobile, and they claimed that the Orbis smartwatch will have a rotating bezel ring at the top and will also come with a power button shaped like a crown.
The function of the bezel ring isn't quite clear though. It might follow the digital crown from Apple and allow the user to zoom in and zoom out of pictures by rotating the bezel. It could also be used to help set timers or alarms, or maybe move the cursor right and left depending on where the ring is turned to help look through lists, according to Techno Buffalo.
Other than that, not much else is known other than the fact that Samsung via an upcoming SDK will be allowing third-party developers and their apps to look into what other features can be made around the ring, according to Sam Mobile.
As for the crown-shaped power button of the Orbis, it is reminiscent of Apple's digital crown for the Apple Watch. However, Samsung's version has no specific functions as most of it has been left up to its rotating ring.
The power button does have standard functions, like sending emergency messages, waking up the screen with a press or launching the S Voice with a double press. Though again, it's unknown what else as Samsung is still looking into improving its bezel ring.
Interested users need not worry though as more information about the Orbis will come soon. It's been confirmed that Samsung will be introducing the Orbis during the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in March.
