Samsung Gear S vs Apple Watch Comparison: How Will These Smartwatches Fare?
While Apple has just unveiled the much anticipated Apple Watch, Samsung is expected to release the company's sixth smartwatch, namely the Gear S, some time this October. Nevertheless, people have already begun comparing the two wearable devices and wonder how they will fare on the market.
As both the Samsung Gear S and the Apple Watch have few new things to offer, it is difficult to predict which device will emerge triumphant. Below is a brief comparison of the specs of both the smartwatches.
Design
In terms of design, the two smartwatches are completely different. Apart from a bulkier design, the Samsung Gear S has a curved display with a single button underneath it. The wristband of Gear S is roughly the same width as the device making it appear as an extension of the main device. Gear S is offered in two variants - a strap type or a bangle type, in addition to a number of color options.
On the other hand, the design of the Apple Watch is more focused as well as detailed. TechTimes reports that the Apple Watch is rectangular-shaped and has a Digital Crown at the side, which allows the user to scroll the screen and perform actions on the watch. Apple Watch is available in two sizes and three different material choices. In addition, the wristband is also available in different designs.
Operating System
Samsung Gear S runs on Tizen OS, while the Apple Watch runs on its own Apple Watch OS. Although not much has been said about the Tizen OS, it offers the functionality required for the device that works even without a phone. Gear S also sports Opera Mini for web browsing.
So far, Apple has shown numerous different apps in the Apple Watch, which are featured in mosaic form, enabling the user to zoom in or out, in addition to customize the apps seen on the main screen.
Connectivity
Apart from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Samsung Gear S also has 3G. In other words, the device can be used for messaging as well as making calls even without using a smartphone. On the other hand, the Apple Watch requires an iPhone to be able to do many of its functions.
