Samsung Galaxy S7 Release Date & Rumors: Smartphones from South Korean Tech Titan to Have e-SIM Functionality
South Korean tech titan Samsung may be launching its upcoming flagship smartphones with the embedded SIM (also known as e-SIM), a concept that was introduced by Apple in its latest iPad model, but failed to make it popular.
Quoting Sam Mobile, Latin Post reports that the Samsung Galaxy S7, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 6 may all come with an e-SIMs in the form of a built in functionality, thereby doing away with need for multiple SIM cards from multiple network carriers.
It is worth mentioning here that Apple had introduced the Apple SIM with the launch of the latest model of the iPad. The Apple SIM allowed the users to swap mobile carriers without requiring swapping between cards. Nevertheless, this SIM card was only available to a few mobile carriers in limited terrirories, since its function was restricted only to two devices. Despite being a pioneering idea, the Apple SIM was mired as most of its initial carriers ultimately backed out. Now, it seems that the major smartphone manufacturers in the market want to re-introduce the concept.
In fact, a report in Financial Times claimed that Apple is also considering the e-SIM functionality.
Basically, the e-SIM would enable users to register for specific carriers even without getting a physical SIM card from the network. The new SIM will do away with much cost for both users and the mobile networks. At the same time, it will make the process much easier. In addition, it will give consumers more freedom to opt as well as swap between carriers. Nevertheless, it is expected that most carriers would still put specific limitations in place while using the e-SIM.
While the Apple SIM failed to get support from carriers, it seems that the e-SIM will have a better prospect. According to 9to5 Google, several carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, and Telefónica are currently in talks for being included with the e-SIM functionality, which will be offered by future smartphones.
As far as the specs of the Galaxy S7 are concerned, an earlier article claimed that it would be using the upcoming Snapdragon 820 from Qualcomm rather than Samsung's own Exynos processor, which the company used for the Galaxy S6. Considering the fact that the Snapdragon 820 is expected to be released for devices in 2016, it is likely that the Galaxy S7 will also not be released in 2015.
