'Salem' Season 3 Episode 1 Spoilers, Recap: Essex Witches Set To Resurrect Mary?
After a long hiatus, "Salem" finally returned with an episode that set up the plot for the rest of the season.
Titled "After the Fall," "Salem" season 3, episode 1 followed Lucifer as he visited the Essex stronghold in the forest and told them that he was not interested in rewarding them for his resurrection. He killed one of the witches and the witches could not do anything since they weren't alive.
The episode also revealed that Tituba was actually alive, but she had lost his eyes after the pack of vicious crows devoured them. She was seen scrambling in the woods, this time with new powers. It turned out that when she ate the eyes of Petrus in the previous season, she also took his powers with her. This season, she is already blind but can already see the future. Unfortunately, all she could see was destruction. Knowing that her mother Mary was the only one who could stop the fallen angel, she brought her corpse to the Essex witches and asked them to resurrect her.
Elsewhere in the episode, Anne discovered that her husband Cotton was suicidal and would rather die than become a slave. Left with no other choice, she decided to give him some freedom and even allowed him to speak and have sex. After their lovemaking, however, Anne slept and Cotton had the opportunity to flee. Unfortunately, Brown Jerkins devoured his innards just when he was about to reach to door of his house. Anne then woke up and told him that she was only testing him, and that if he does it again, he would eat him up from the inside.
Meanwhile, Alden tried to escape Salem after burying Mary. He came across native Americans killing Indians and joined them, but shockingly, he discovered that they could not be killed. A couple of soldiers arrived and had the Indians flee. They recognized Alden and arrested him. Magistrate Hawthorne ordered that he be hanged in public but the town disagreed. In the end, he made John the leader of Salem's militia to train soldiers so they could protect the entire town from external threats.
The premiere episode also revealed that Mercy Lewis was running a brothel, helping young girls escape their uncles, fathers and brothers who sell their bodies for sex. Towards the end of the episode, a skeleton emerged from the Earth, filled with insects. He killed a man and took his flesh.
The last moments of the episode saw Mary finally opening her eyes, indicating her return.
"Salem" season 3 airs every Wednesday, 9:00 P.M. on WGN America.
