SAG Award News: ‘Birdman’ Wins Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Sunday was another big day for 'Birdman'. After winning the Golden Globe in the Best Picture category earlier this month, 'Birdman' bagged the coveted award in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category at the 2015 Screen Actor Guild Awards.
IB Times reports that while the movie was nominated for as many as four awards, it only took home one beating tough contenders like 'Boyhood,' 'The Grand Budapest Hotel,' 'The Theory of Everything,' and 'The Imitation Game.'
As many as seven actors of 'Birdman' went up the podium to accept the coveted award, as the host Edward Norton passed on the microphone first to Michael Keaton, saying that he was simply following the "age over beauty" rule.
In his acceptance speech, Keaton said, "Thank you. This is very, very exciting," adding, "It's the ultimate team sport what we do for a living." Keaton went on to add that co-stars are "tremendous" and also noted that he's "proud to be part of this group."
Meanwhile, while going to the mic, Naomi Watts virtually tripped on Emma Stone's gown. Overlooking the stumble, Watts expressed her thanks for the 'Birdman' director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Zack Galifianakis, on the other hand, roused laughs when he mimicked Julianne Moore's acceptance speech for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Before stepping back, Galifiankis remarked, "When I was on 'As the World Turns.'".
Stone, Edward Norton and Andrea Riseborough finished their acceptance speech, saying filming 'Birdman' was an "incredible experience" as well as a "true privilege."
For the uninitiated, 'Birdman' has also been nominated for the Best Picture at the 2015 Academy Awards. Again, the movie will compete with 'Boyhood,' 'The Imitation Game,' 'The Theory of Everything,' as well as 'The Grand Budapest Hotel" in the same category at the Oscars.
