NBA Trade News 2015 Sacramento Kings: Franchise in Talks with George Karl
After a better than expected start to the season, the Sacramento Kings have stumbled greatly, having lost 10 of its last 11 games, and losing all but six of its last 24 since the curious firing of head coach Mike Malone last December.
Now, Yahoo! Sports reports that the Kings are in "serious back-and-forth" talks with former NBA head coach George Karl to steer the ship right.
According to a source, Karl has expressed his admiration for Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, and has made it clear that she he take the post, he would be concentrating solely on coaching, and not front office moves.
The 63-year-old has a 1,131-756 coaching record in the NBA, and is sixth all-time in number of wins.
Karl has ties with Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro, whom he worked with when he was coaching the Denver Nuggets. The well-respected coach also has ties with Hall of Famer, and Kings adviser Chris Mullin, whom he coached for two seasons with the Golden State Warriors.
The Kings, though, are not alone in their interest in Karl. The Orlando Magic, who recently fired coach Jacque Vaughn, are reportedly eyeing the legendary coach as well.
Last Friday, Karl tweeted an official statement regarding his coaching career.
"Love and miss the NBA rodeo! It's no secret I would love the opportunity to coach one more time. Love the skills and speed of the Magic and the great young players throughout the league," Karl's statement read.
The Nuggets surprisingly fired Karl the following year after winning the 2012-2013 NBA Coach of the Year award. He began coaching the team in 2004, after taking over mid-season and leading the team to the playoffs.
Yahoo! Sports reports that the Kings could also look to Mark Jackson, who went to St. John's with Mullin and D'Alessandro, Warriors assistant coach Alvin Gentry, and former Kings guard and TNT analyst Kenny Smith to fill their coaching need.
