Sacramento Kings NBA 2015 News: GM Pete D’Alessandro to Join Colorado’s Kroenke Sports
Sacramento Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro is on his way back to the mountains of Colorado as Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that he is nearing a deal for a front office job with Kroenke Sports.
Kroenke Sports oversees the operations of the Denver Nuggets of the NBA as well as the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, and the Rapids of the MLS.
According to the report, D'Alessandro would serve in an operations position, answering to president Josh Kroenke, with a formal agreement and title to completed Thursday.
D'Alessandro was an assistant general manager in Denver under now Toronto Raptors GM Masai Ujiri before moving to the Kings three years ago. He appeared to making strides in turning around the franchise with a relatively good start this past season on the back of DeMarcus Cousins and coach Mike Malone.
But, as noted by Wojnarowski, new Kings owner Vivek Ranadive usurped his authority as general manager, hiring former Kings center Vlade Divac to oversee basketball operations, and forcing D'Alessandro to fire Malone despite the good start to the season.
Malone is also a candidate to fill in the Nuggets coaching void, and the report points out that D'Alessandro's arrival in Denver would have no negative impact on the possibility of hiring the former Kings coach.
Apart from having a history with the Nuggets franchise, D'Alessandro also has a strong relationship with general manager Tim Connelly. Whatever D'Alessandro's official title winds up being, his role will allow him to be a resource, whenever needed, for Connelly.
Sources say that D'Alessandro was being courted by his alma mater, St. John's, to serve as its athletic director before choosing to remain in the NBA. As noted by Yahoo Sports, St. John's coach Chris Mullin has been vocal about his desire to bring D'Alessandro as their athletic director and had discussed contract terms before Kroenke Sports stepped in.
