Russell Westbrook NBA 2015 News: OKC Thunder Point Guard Triple Double Streak in the Spotlight

Last Friday, Western Conference Player of the Month Russell Westbrook suffered a facial fracture after an inadvertent knee literally put a dent in his face. He returned four days after undergoing surgery to the tune of 49 points, a career-high 16 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in a 123-118 overtime win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

With his incredible stat line, he became the first player since Michael Jordan to finish with four straight triple-doubles. As a note, Jordan had seven in a row back in 1989. And as pointed out by Ball Don't Lie, the only other players to accomplish this feat are Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, and Maurice Stokes.

In case that wasn't elite enough, Westbrook's 49 points tied Larry Bird for the most points scored in a triple-double effort in the past 30 seasons.

During his amazing four-game run, the All-Star MVP is averaging 37 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 10.5 assists per game. But that run stretches all the way back to the beginning of February, as NBA.com points out:

"Westbrook averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 10.3 assists as the Thunder went 9-3 in February. He joined Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to put up a 31-9-10 line for a calendar month (minimum 10 games played). Westbrook capped the month by becoming the first player to record three straight triple-doubles since James in March 2009. Westbrook also ended the month with six consecutive games with at least 20 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds, the first player to do so since Michael Jordan in 1988-1989."

"It's definitely a blessing," the dynamo of a guard said, "But more importantly, I think it's important that we're winning," said Westbrook.

The Oklahoma City Thunder who was out of the top-eight in the West for the most of the season, now have a hold of the eighth seed.

The following day, in a second game of a back-to-back, Westbrook's streak of triple-doubles was snapped, but still impressed with 43 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
