Rory McIlroy News: World No. 1 McIlroy Injures Ankle, Expected to be Out of Open Championships
The world's No. 1 ranked golfer is expected to miss next week's Open Championship after announcing Monday that he suffered "total rupture" of a ligament in his ankle, NBC Sports reports.
According to his own Instagram post, Rory McIlroy suffered the injury playing soccer with his mates over the weekend, and will miss this week's Scottish Open, which he was scheduled to compete in.
The Irish golfer is slated for further testing on his ankle in the next few days, and has yet to set a timetable for his recovery and return.
"Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment play day by day," McIlroy wrote. "Rehab already started"¦.Working hard to get back as soon as I can."
As noted by NBC Sports, Dr. James Gladstone, co-director of sports medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital, explained on "Morning Drive" that icing to reduce swelling is the typical rehabilitation process for such injuries, which is followed by electrical stimulation, a gentle range of motion program, capped by the strengthening of the tendons on the side of the leg, which helps compensate for the strained ligament while it heals. Dr. Steven McGregor, a fitness expert and sport scientist, will be supervising the recovery of the 26-year-old 24/7.
CNN reports that McIlroy's spokesperson has given him a 10 percent chance of playing in the British Open. He was slated to play in four events over a six-week span.
NBC Sports points out that the Irishman is the defending champion at the Open, and after posting back-to-back top 10 results at the Masters and the U.S. Open, mcIlroy was supposed to be the betting favorite coming into the tournament.
American Jordan Spieth is favored by bookies to win the Open Championship, as he rides the momentum of winning consecutive majors at the Masters and the U.S. Open.
