Ronda Rousey News: UFC Champion to Star in 'Road House' Reboot
UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will be starring in MGM's reboot of the 80s cult classic "Road House," Variety reports. According to the report, sources say that MGM is currently in discussions with screenwriters, and has projected production to start in 2016, with the undefeated MMA fighter taking on the role that made Patrick Swayze a star.
The original "Road House" was released in 1989, and starred Swayze as a bouncer that was hired to take control of "The Double Deuce""”one of the rowdiest and loudest bars in Missouri.
Variety also points out that while Rousey embraced the idea of starring in the reboot, she wanted to remain respectful, with sources saying the UFC star recently reached out to Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, asking for her blessing.
Should the project push through, it would be the largest role the MMA fighter has had to take in her short Hollywood career. She has previously made appearances in "Furious 7," "Entourage," and "The Expendables 3."
As noted by Variety, "Road House" will be the fourth project developed specifically for Rousey, which follows her biopic "MyFight/Your Fight" at Paramount, "The Athena Project" at Warner Bros. and "Mile 22" by STX.
Rousey recently hinted that she doesn't plan to stay in MMA until her 30s. The 28-year-old has cleaned up the women's bantamweight division, and has won all 12 of her fights since turning pro four years ago.
Her last three fights have lasted a combined one minute and four seconds, and has only gone past the first round of any fight once. She is set to face former boxing champion Holly Holm next at UFC 193, which is set at the massive Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
Her last pay-per-view event, UFC 190, is currently the UFC's biggest PPV event of 2015.
