Robin van Persie News: Footballer Completes Move to Fenerbahce
Former Manchester United star Robin van Persie was unveiled Tuesday as a Fenerbahce player at the Sukru Sacoglu stadium in Istanbul where he was met by thousands of the club's fans. As reported by The Guardian, the 31-year-old arrived in Turkey over the weekend to finalize his transfer from the English club.
"I'm humbled to see that so many great fans came today to greet me and to welcome me to your family," the Dutch national told the crowd.
"I promise you one thing; I will do everything in my power to help Fenerbahce win as many trophies to make you guys happy because if I see today, I can only imagine how it would be if you win the league what king od party that would be. I hope I can share that with you guys. Let's do it together."
Van Persie left Manchester United after spending three years with the club. He scored 58 goals in that span, with 30 of those coming in his inaugural season at Old Trafford on his way to leading United to their 20th top-flight title in Sir Alex Ferguson's last season at the helm. He was also the Premier League's leading scorer in back-to-back-seasons following his £24 million transfer from Arsenal.
As noted by The Guardian, Van Persie's role gradually diminished under David Moyes and his old Holland manager Louis van Gaal, during a period that also saw him mired with injuries.
Van Persie is set to team up with his former United running mate Nani, who joined Fenerbahce earlier in the summer. Another former teammate, Raul Meirles is also with the Istanbul club.
The Guardian points out that his departure at Old Trafford leaves United thin in attacking players with only Wayne Rooney, James Wilson and the injured Javier Hernandez left.
