Rihanna News: Singer Faces Opposition from DC Comics Over New 'Robyn' Trademark

Pop artist Rihanna's recent decision to trademark the name 'Robyn' has moved DC Comics to file an official opposition to prevent her to.

DC's current argument is that the name is far too close to their trademarked character Robin, as in Batman's loyal sidekick.

While the pop star has commonly used the stage name Rihanna, her full legal name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Her reported reason to trademark the name 'Robyn' in 2014 was to help build her cosmetic and fashion line.

"An official opposition to the application was filed last week with the United States Trademark and Patent Office, arguing that 'consumers are likely to be deceived' into believing any products marked 'Robyn' originated with DC Comics. It's a fairly standard argument regarding potential confusion in the marketplace and trademark dilution, this time involving Robin the Boy Wonder, characterized by the publisher as 'one of the most prominent figures DC comic book universe'," wries Comic Book Resources.

Rihanna has yet to respond to the opposition and currently has 40 days from the official filing to do so. With enough reasoning, the opposition can be appealed to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Situations such as this one has commonly appeared in various instances.

"We saw similar situations last year, when Disney moved to stop DJ/producer Deadmau5 from trademarking his signature 'mau5head' logo, and DC filed a complain with the European Union's Office for the Harmonization of the Internal Market regarding a Spanish soccer team's bat logo (in the latter case, the team abandoned the stylized emblem)," writes Comic Book Resources.
