Rihanna Lawsuit News: Singer Wins Case Against UK Store Topshop

A lawsuit that has been going on since 2013 finally came to a close and the winning party is pop star Rihanna against U.K.'s top retailer, Topshop. The case went up to the Court of Appeals and its decision last Thursday was the first of its kind according to several reports.

Three judges were said to have unanimously agreed to Rihanna's appeal claiming that the use of her photo in 2011 in one of the brand's sleeveless shirt was damaging to her character and have the possibility to lead people in thinking that she gave her approval to the brand.

The 'Diamonds' singer sued the parent company of Topshop, Arcadia for a whopping $5 Million in 2013 and finally won just last Thursday when the CA released its decision. The photo of Rihanna was reportedly from her 2011 music video shoot in Northern Ireland.

The photo, according to the decision of the High Court Judge Justice Birss was said to be causing the buyers to be deceived in purchasing the shirt thinking that the pop singer supports the brand, which clearly she doesn't.

Also, of course the use of the photo was without Rihanna's permission according to several reports. Although the case was a strong one, apparently it doesn't pave the way for other celebrities to sue other companies for the use of their photo without permission.

According to copyright lawyer, Paul Joseph, "The court was very keen to stress that there were specific facts that made Rihanna's case stronger than usual," he told BBC, "The image that was used here was actually from the publicity material from her Talk That Talk album. These particular factors would make the public think this T-shirt had been authorized by her," he added.

Topshop and Rihanna were still unable to comment on the recent finalization of the case.
