Reworked ‘Wizard of Oz’ Series: NBC to Air ‘Emerald City’ Based on L. Frank Baum’s Novels in 2016

Although the 'Emerald City' idea was pitched to NBC prior to the 2013-14 season and was it was thought to be aired during that season, the network channel turned down the proposal. However, NBC has now reworked the show and placed an order for 10 episodes, which will be aired sometime in 2016.

Quoting a report in Deadline, Latin Post states that the series will be based on the 14 original novels of L. Fran Baum. The novels are set in the city of Oz and made famous in "The Wizard of Oz." Nevertheless, similar to majority of shows which have been adapted from literature for TV shows in recent times, it is expected that even 'Emerald City' will take a dark angle.

It is rumored that the story will be transformed to be something like the 'Game of Thrones,' by updating it with dark connotations seen in the popular NBC fantasy series.

The network has released an official description for the show that reads, "In 'Emerald City,' in the blink of a tornado's eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) and her K9 police dog are transported to another world, one far removed from our own - a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy."

It further states, "This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you've never seen before, where wicked witches don't stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands."

The official description of 'Emerald City' mentions about Adria Arjona, who has become popular recently with her roles in CBS' 'Person of Interest,' 'True Detective' Season 2 on HBO, and a new TNT drama series based in Miami. However, the young Latina actress will be playing a lead role for the first time in 'Emerald City'.

While the renewed show will be produced by Universal TV, it will be written by David Schulner, who along with Shaun Cassidy will also perform the duties of executive producer.
