NBA 2015 News: Cleveland Cavaliers Looking to Limit James & Irving’s Minutes Next Season
The Cleveland Cavaliers came within two games of winning the NBA championship this past season. They managed to do so with Kevin Love going out with a shoulder injury in the first round of the playoffs, and Kyrie Irving suffering an NBA Finals-ending knee injury.
This coming season, the Cavs are said to be looking at limiting their stars' minutes. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto, the team is looking to limit both LeBron James' and Irving's minutes in 2015-16.
They began the trend last season, with James averaging a career-low 36.1 minutes per game. He also played the fewest games of his career in any 82-game season. Pluto notes that this plan is the logic behind the signings of veterans Mo Williams and Richard Jefferson.
Needing to rely heavily on James in the playoffs with the injuries to Love and later Irving, the four-time MVP averaged 42.2 minutes per game in the postseason, on his way to a league-high 844 total playoff minutes.
Irving, for his part, played a career-high 36.4 minutes per game last season. But while he is only 23 years old, he is coming off a surgery to repair a fractured kneecap, and struggled with ankle issues as well in the playoffs.
As noted by the Plain Dealer report, in Tim Duncan's 13th season, the San Antonio Spurs cut his playing time to 31.3 minutes per game, and shaved it further the following season to 28.4.
Apart from signing Williams and Jefferson, the Cavs were able to bring their core back, re-signing Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, James Jones and Matthew Dellavedova.
The Cavs have yet to re-sign Tristan Thompson, who is reportedly eyeing a max contract. He is, at the very least, expected to sign a qualifying offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next year.
