'Rectify' Finale Recap And Spoilers: Was Daniel Freed?

Sundance's "Rectify" capped its fourth season with a fitting finale.

The episode had a rather cold open, segueing from a flashback to the day that Daniel was about to come home, with Janet reminiscing how he was, to the present day. It was followed by the heart-to-heart talk between Janet and Amantha, where Janet learned that Amantha so often felt that she was her mother's source of disappointment.

Amantha then had a wonderful scene with Jon, where viewers felt their long and winding journey together, and the relief after all the battles they had to go through.

The journey of Daniel over the course of different scenes with different people allowed Aden Young to have his final chance to delve into the complexity of his feelings--from discovering that Chloe was already gone to questioning the highly tempered expectations when hanging with the guys in the house.

Elsewhere in the episode, Daniel chose to remember Kerwin's last day prior to his execution, and how that moment seemed to represent everyone on death row. It was underscored by a flashback to a conversation between the two while inside the prison cell, where they imagined a leisurely drive through New York City.

Towards the end of the episode, the family gathered around the television to watch the press conference in which the GBI announced that the murder case of Hannah Dean was reopened. The press conference also stated that if sufficient conflicting evidence would turn up, then the conviction of Daniel would be set aside and he would be freed.

The final moments of the season finale saw Daniel alone on his bed. This scene was then cut to a beautiful, sunset field, where he was walking to the direction of Chloe, who was holding a baby. Daniel smiled at her, held the baby, the three of them forming an idyllic portrait.
