Rapper KB Talks Artistic Process, Caitlyn Jenner's Transition, and CS Lewis in New Interview [VIDEO]
Reach Records artist KB's new record, Live for Tomorrow, has already experienced critical and commercial success since its release on April 21st. In a new interview with famous radio personality Sway, he gave insight into everything from his artistic process to his college education. KB also gave a live performance of his hit song, "I Believe" before waxing philosophical about his friendship with Lecrae, "a cat named CS Lewis," and Caitlyn Jenner.
"I feel like in life I am called to help people understand who made them and what their purpose is," KB revealed. This personal calling originally led him not to a career trajectory as a rap artist, but to Trinity College, where he studied theology and cross-cultural evangelism. "I wanted to learn how to go somewhere where people need help." he explained, adding that he fully intended to become a missionary overseas. However, "it became clear to me that some of the greatest needs are right in front of me, in the neighborhood where I came from."
When asked about when he received his own clarity, KB answered with a quote from CS Lewis's book The Problem of Pain: "God whispers in our prosperity, but screams in our darkness." KB admitted that after starting college early, he thought that "making it" financially was what life was about. He was sold on the dream of financial security and success, but found himself discouraged. "It was in that moment when I had that opportunity in front of me and it wasn't doing it for me. I needed something else."
Ironically he didn't originally feel like "Christianity" and "rap" go together. KB now believes that "God met with him through hip-hop." Speaking to the philosophy of Reach Records as a whole, he said, "We believe that all creativity, all innovation -- it's God who supplies creativity, because he's the Creator." He added later, "Reach Records is for the people. It isn't for the money, it isn't for the fame."
Speaking of fellow Reach Records artists Lecrae and Andy Mineo, KB let on that they have a strong friendship. The bond that cements their relationship might be music, but when they are together, they tend to talk about everything else except music. KB shared his primary motivation for being an artist, saying, "At the end of the day what matters is lives being changed. That's the prime product. That's what keeps me up at night."
Toward the end of the interview (and perhaps inspired by KB's incredibly articulate and well-thought out answers to all of the rest of his questions), Sway took the opportunity to ask KB about his feelings on the recent gender transition of Caitlyn Jenner.
KB broke the question down from several angles, musing, "I think the question is, what is gender? And who gives gender to us? Is gender just an impulse? If I feel like I want to be something else, does that mean that I should pursue it?...We gotta start somewhere so we know how to respond to it. For us, we believe that God gives us our gender and it's very sacred. It cannot simply be changed physically, because you're more than body parts -- you're a soul."
KB candidly added, "I want the same thing Bruce wants. I want to be happy. I want to be full. I want to know that my purpose is something this is impacting the world and that I'm who I'm supposed to be. I would just challenge him on his interpretation."
After another moment of reflection, he stated, "I think what he did - there was some courage involved in that. It takes a lot to do something like that." But he was quick to add, "Could it be reflective of our culture that we may have our priorities mixed up with what we would hail as ultimately courageous?"
