Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson News: Bellator Looks to Block Fighter's Return to the UFC
Soon after Quinton "Rampage" Jackson left Bellator to sign back with Zuffa back in December, the UFC quickly lined the former champion up for an April 25 fight with Fabio Maldonado. Bellator MMA announced Monday, it has filed a lawsuit that will try and block Jackson from making his UFC return.
The suit, which was filed in New Jersey, is asking a judge to grant an injunction and "related relief" to "compel Jackson to honor his contractual agreement" after he signed with Zuffa, MMA Junkie reports.
The Viacom-owned promotions claims that Jackson only fulfilled three of the six fight deal he signed back in 2013.
"We look forward to having one of our MMA stars fighting for Bellator again," a released statement said.
According to MMA Weekly, Jackson had a contract dispute with Bellator before signing with the UFC, and after Bellator failed to respond within the window that his contract with them specified, he felt he was well within his rights to sign with his former promotion.
"After five months of grueling negotiations and gray-area contract talks with Bellator MMA and parent-company Viacom, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson officially terminates his contract with the up-and-coming promotion citing multiple breaches since the removal of President and Founder Bjorn Rebney," was what a statement said from Jackson's camp after he signed with the UFC.
"Jackson exercises a clause in the agreement that allows for a 45-day window to satisfy any contract dispute. Bellator MMA, failing to fulfill the requests of Jackson, was put on notice, failed to respond and eventually notified that negotiations were officially terminated," it also said.
MMA Weekly points out a similar situation with former Bellator Lightweight champion Eddie Avarez, who also had lengthy legal battle with Bellator. After the proceedings, Alvarez briefly returned to Bellator before leaving for the UFC.
The MMA Weekly report opines that the same outcome could unfold with Jackson.
