Quadrooter Latest News: Concerns About The Vulnerability Exaggerated?
The news about a security flaw in Android devices, which potentially affect 900 million users, was understandably met with alarm.
However, the risks might be exaggerated a bit because Google has security systems in check to prevent these types of vulnerabilities that allow the attacker to jailbreak your device.
The news about the Quadrooter was first reported by Check Point, which described at as a set of four vulnerabilities affecting Android phones using Qualcomm chips. If one of these vulnerabilities is used, the hacker can breach and change the root access of the phone.
In an interview with Fox News, Alex Gantman, Qualcomm VP fro product security, said that if the user is prudent enough, they would not be affected by all these malicious apps. He said that first, for the attackers to get to their phone, they have to get them to open their app in the first place.
Google also has a system in place where it warns users against opening an app coming from a suspicious source. However, if the user ignores the security alerts, "that malicious app would essentially be able to jailbreak your device."
Although he said that that Quadrooter news should be taken seriously, not just by their company or Google, but users as well. However, "the attention that this [vulnerability] is deserving does seem exaggerated."
Gantman also added that Quadrooter is no different from all the news they get all the time regarding security vulnerabilities, and there's a procedure in place to deal with them.
