Insider Look: Cross Country Trip with the Prius V, is the Performance Hybrid a realistic purchase for all terrains?

With a fully loaded Prius V, including 2 humans, 1 50-pound-dog, and 4 months worth of luggage, I travelled across the USA to test out the hybrid's durability and usability.

With a total trip average of an unbelievable 40.1 MPG, our Pruis V hauled through rain, snow, extreme winds, flatlands, mountains, coastal lands, and unpredictable terrain. The only serious hiccups during our 4 months of travel came when we landed a nail the front right tire, and a serious blow to our MPG in some extreme high wind terrain somewhere in-between Texas and New Mexico, where our average dropped to 37.5 MPG, which still dominates the MPG market.

During our time in large cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, with our trunk emptied at friends house, we averaged  an astonishing 48 MPG, making insane LA traffic almost worth it. Translating this average into actual dollars; it only cost us a remarkable $180 dollars to travel over 2,000 miles from Redding, California to Brevard, North Carolina.

Good gas mileage isn't the only thing this vehicle has to offer. Its spacious cabin allows for a seriously comfortable ride, with a pressure controlled lower back panel for the driver and plenty of leg room for all passengers. Because of its electric powered heating and cooling system, passengers don't have to wait for the vehicle to warm up for the AC to kick in hot weather or of the heat to kick in in cold weather, which really counted when temperatures hit 117 degrees F in Redding, California, and 23 degrees F at Mount Rainier in Washington State, respectively.

The vehicle's kit includes a stereo system plays music through Bluetooth, and it's USB port can charge your smartphone or iPad. The extended cab of the cabin from the usual tiny-spaced Prius makes it an easy family car, which we tested out as well. I hauled a friend and her 7-month-old with a mega-huge car seat from LA to Las Vegas very comfortably, with room to store our jumbo stroller, snacks, a baby bag, and purses all in the truck. The easy open trunk made transportation super easy, and the backup camera kept us feeling save with a carload.

All in all, I am now a Pruis V addict, and would recommend this vehicle as a worthy investment for travel ethusiasts.
