Premature Birth On Vacation Surprises British Couple: Parents Stuck in New York

No one can predict, with any amount of certainty, when exactly a baby will be born - not even the mother. On that note, new mother Katie Amos was caught off-guard as her son was prematurely born on December 28, unexpectedly during their holiday in NYC.

It seems she and her husband Lee Johnston had planned to take a four-day break in New York City, 11 weeks before the arrival of their child and the couple, from Lincolnshire, were stranded. Their insurers had agreed to pay for medical expenses, but they would still have to pay other expenses like their regular bills at home, and other costs as long as they were in New York.

30-year-old Katie Amos has revealed that her son is "doing great" even though his weight is just 3 lb (1.4kg). He has been kept in the special unit and is being looked after by the nurses and taken really good care of, but she has to be there to nurse him and provide milk.

In order to help them out in this difficult period, one of their friends has managed to get donations of more than £6,000 through Facebook fundraising page. The insurance company was aware of the pregnancy of Miss Amos - the couple had obtained a doctor's certificate before traveling. However, they cannot leave the hospital until the due date, as the newborn has to remain in hospital for another 11 weeks.

The couple are presently put up in a hotel that has been made available by a charity, but they still have to pay for food and clothes, apart from their rent and other bills back home in Burgh-le-Marsh.
