'Power Rangers' Movie News: Dark & Gritty Fan Made Film Surprises Franchise Followers

'90s kids all over the world were pleasantly surprised with the unexpected release of an impressively well-made 'Power Rangers' fan film by producer Adi Shankar.

This particular adaptation strikes fans so powerfully as it is the iconic heroes as we've never seen them before. It's an absolutely delighting dark and gritty R-rated take on the franchise and it's certainly peaked the attention of many people.

The short was directed by Joseph Kahn and stars Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek.

Hitfix had an opportunity to sit down with Kahn to discuss his well received fan film:

"I think the trick that I really wanted to do with this was to make that dark and gritty version that everybody keeps talking about, but really do it. Really see if I could totally accomplish it with essentially a really incredible incredibly silly property."

Lionsgate has been in early production for their own 'Power Rangers' reboot, but it seems the bar has been significantly raised.

Kahn has actually made it public that he wouldn't work on the official reboot even if he was asked. He says he has no interest in the franchise, he just wanted to prove to himself he could do it.

"The irony here is that I wouldn't even want to make 'Power Rangers: The Movie' for real," Kahn states. "Like if I had to make a 'Power Rangers' movie, this is it. It's 14 minutes long and it's violent and this is what I have in me. If they offered me the 200 million version, the PG-13 version, I literally wouldn't do it. It's just not interesting to me."
