Portland Trail Blazers NBA 2015 News: GM Says Reports of Aldridge Leaving are ‘Not True’
Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge is one of the biggest names entering free agency in July, and as such, questions surrounding his future have been a constant in the NBA rumor mill. Recently, though Blazers general manager Neil Olshey told the Oregonian that reports that Aldridge is on his way out of the Pacific Northwest are not true.
"It was misreported, it's not true. I can tell you he has not informed anybody in this organization his intention not to return to this team," Olshey said.
ESPN, along with other sports media outlets previously reported that the veteran big man had informed the team of his intentions to sign elsewhere once he enters free agency.
"Thankfully, I had other things to distract me today from getting too infuriated by the misreporting. I spoke with Lamarcus. I actually asked him, "How would you like me to address it?' He just said "Just say it's not true. You and I know where we are right now,'" Olshey was quoted saying.
ESPN's Marc Stein and Chris Broussard said a source close to Aldridge had said the sweet shooting big is not expected to re-sign with the Blazers, pointing to the recent trade of former Blazers forward Nicolas Batum as a sign that the All-Star is leaving.
"He's gone. There's a 99.9 percent chance that he's out of Portland," the report quotes the source.
The ESPN report also says that one of the reasons Aldridge is inclined to jump ship is that he doesn't believe the Blazers can attract top free agents to improve the team.
One of Aldridge's best friends on the team, Wes Matthews will also be a free agent, and has the conundrum of trying to get a deal after suffering a torn Achilles just last season.
The San Antonio Spurs have been rumored to be Aldridge's next destination, with the Dallas Mavericks, and most the Los Angeles Lakers also said to make the list of his preferred destinations.
