‘Pokemon Alpha Sapphire’ and ‘Omega Ruby’ Game Reviews, Storyline and Plot Details: Top Critic Ratings
The two new Nintendo Pokemon titles, 'Alpha Sapphire' and 'Omega Ruby', are remakes of the 2003 hit GBA games 'Pokemon Sapphire' and 'Pokemon Ruby'. The new games were released on November 21 for the Nintendo 3DS platform.
Each game has a slightly different story, but both are still set on the Hoenn region, the same place where 'Pokemon Sapphire' and 'Ruby' started. A new story episode has also been released with the game called the Delta Episode, which introduces a new set of characters in the story.
Used as the cover character in 'Alpha Sapphire', Groudon is a ground-type legendary Pokemon which the villains of the said game, Team Magma, wants to awaken to expand the land with its Drought ability.
In 'Omega Ruby', the player is up against Team Aqua who has an opposite goal to Team Magma. The team seeks for Kyogre, a water-type legendary Pokemon which floods the earth with its Drizzle ability, to create a world where the dominant element is water.
The game structure hasn't changed. Players are still training their Pokemon to become strong enough to battle against opponents in gyms. Beating a gym leader lets you obtain a badge. Once you've defeated all eight gyms and collected their badges, you are eligible to fight against the Elite Four and finally the Champion.
Despite being a remake, the two games presented numerous new features including new mega evolutions, which were introduced in 'Pokemon X & Y'. Players will find the special stones that activate mega evolutions in ORAS, which now introduces the concept of primal reversion. In primal reversion, the Pokemon have the ability to revert themselves back to their pre-historic selves.
Overall, Pokemon 'Alpha Sapphire' and 'Omega Ruby' did a "fantastic job of reintroducing Hoenn", IGN stated. The game review presented flaws in the games, such as the excessive number of water Pokemon and the dull navigation to their habitats. On that note, IGN gave it a 7.8 out of 10.
On the other hand, commenting about the series-old issues still not being resolved, Gamespot gave a rating of 8/10 to the game, and lastly Metacritic gave it a 8.2 out of 10 based on 24 critics.
