PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One March Sales News: Sony’s Console Outsells Microsoft’s Device Last Month
Citing the latest sales results, market research firm NPD has announced that Sony's PS4 has outsold Microsoft's Xbox One yet again. The sales results from March 2015 were released on Thursday evening.
Recently a Sony representative released a statement that said, "We are truly honored PlayStation 4 is the top-selling console and No. 1 in software sales again according to NPD sales data for March 2015. PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader both globally and in the United States and we want to thank gamers worldwide for their ongoing support."
IB Times reports that in addition to being the top-selling console, the PS4 software also sold more that the software on any other platform. In fact, PlayStation 4 versions of 'Bloodline' and 'Battlefield Hardline' were the two best-selling games in March.
According to the report, this is the 17th month of sales for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which were launched in North America in November 2013. Sales results show that by early March, the Japanese firm had already sold 20.2 million PlayStation 4 units since the launch of the product. On the other hand, in December 2014, Microsoft said that it had shipped as many as 10 million Xbox One units.
A month later, in January 2015, the eighth-gen PlayStation 4 achieved 18.5 million in unit sales, just few days following the holiday shopping rush ended. In addition, Sony announced that it reached 10.9 million subscribers to PlayStation Plus, an increase of roughly 3 million from October end. A subscription-based service, PlayStation Plus grants users access to exclusive content. The annual subscription fee for PlayStation Plus is $50.
The market research firm further stated that PlayStation 4 continued to maintain a big lead in the eighth-generation market. Within just 24 hours following its worldwide launch on Nov. 15, 2013, 1 million devices flew off shelves. By December 2013, Sony sold over 2.1 million PS4 consoles worldwide and in less than one month later, the sales figure reached 4.2 million.
Earlier this year, Strategy Analytics published a report in February predicting that Sony would outsell Microsoft by a whopping 40 percent until 2018. In other words, the PlayStation 4 would be the leading console throughout the first five years of its availability.
