'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' Release Date, Production Update: Johnny Depp Returns to Set of 'Dead Men Tell No Tales'

After a brief hiatus, Johnny Depp has returned to the sets of 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Man Tell No Tales' following a hand injury while shooting for the fifth installment of the hit franchise in Australia. As the actor had to fly to New York for surgery, the production of the movie was hit hard. Initially, it was planned that Depp would return after a two-week break, but eventually he returned after a month.

Christian Today reports that producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed the actor's return to the set by posting the first official image of Depp portraying Captain Jack Sparrow on Twitter. The photo shows Jack tied to the mast of a ship with two pirates holding him secure in place.

The photo is accompanies by a caption that reads, "Captain Jack is back and we're not letting him go."

Meanwhile, it is worth noting here that Bruckheimer, who produced the first three installments of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' took on the role of producer for the fourth as well as the fifth film. On that note, the helm of the film will be taken by the directing duo Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. Jeff Nathanson has written the script of the film.

While the original cast members Geoffrey Rush, Stephen Graham, and Kevin R. McNally have returned to the fifth installment to reprise their respective roles, they are joined by newcomers like Javier Bardiem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, and Golshifteh Farani.

The Collider reports that the film's official plot is based on Captain Salazar (Bardiem) and his group of ghost pirates, who rise from their prison at sea to kill all pirates. Now, it becomes imperative for Jack Sparrow to retrieve the Trident of Poseidon, an ancient object d'art that grants its wielder control of the seas to fight back Captain Salazar and his band.

Incidentally, none of the previous three installments achieved the same level of critical acclaim as the original 'Pirates of Caribbean' film. However, the box office earning of each film continued to grow. Now that the new directors at the helm, fans can expect that the upcoming film will also achieve the critical success of the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean.'

'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
