Phoenix Suns NBA 2015 News: Suns to Sign Brandon Knight to Five-Year $7 Million Deal
Following a disappointing season mired with chemistry issues that saw them fail to follow up on what appeared to be a promising outing in 2013-2014, the Phoenix Suns look for more stability as Gery Woelfel of the Journal Times reports that the team will be signing midseason acquisition Brandon Knight to a five-year $70 million contract.
The Suns acquired Knight, who was enjoying an All-Star caliber season, from the Milwaukee Bucks back in February's trade deadline. He was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.
Before being traded, the 23-year-old was averaging 17.8 points and 5.4 assists for the surprising Bucks, who would end up having the biggest turnaround in the league coming from 15 wins the previous season to finish 41-41 in 2014-2015, and the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
Knight had a short, injury-addled stint for the Suns playing in just 11 games while averaging 13.4 points and 4.5 assists. He suffered an ankle injury on March 9, and missed 16 of the team's last 17 games. He underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on the injured ankle in April.
The reported deal is similar to what the Suns gave guard Eric Bledsoe the previous offseason.
With news of Knight's impending signing, and rumors of the team shopping Bledsoe around for potential trades, the Suns continue their curious off-court moves, which began with last offseason's acquisition of Isaiah Thomas.
The arrival of Thomas appeared to disrupt the chemistry between Bledsoe and former Suns guard Goran Dragic, which led to the latter asking for a trade. After trading Dragic to the Miami Heat, the Suns eventually parted ways with Thomas, trading him to the Boston Celtics.
Prior the 2015 Draft, Bledsoe's name came up in a couple of trade rumors, which included the New York Knicks as potential suitors for the explosive guard.
