Philadelphia 76ers News: Embiid to Have Second Surgery on Injured Foot, Will Miss 2015-16 Season

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is set to undergo a second procedure on his surgically repaired right foot, which is expected to result in the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft missing the whole of next season, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

About a month ago, reports surfaced that Embiid, who has yet to play in an NBA game, suffered a setback in the healing of his foot. The Sixers announced that the center would need a bone-graft procedure on the fractured foot.

"A collective decision has been made that the best approach to promote full healing would be to proceed with a bone graft of the fracture site," Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie said in a statement. "We anticipate the procedure will take place in the next seven to 10 days and result in Joel missing the upcoming season."

The talented big man has been haunted by injuries recently. He suffered a stress fracture during his stint at Kansas that kept him out of both the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, and a week before the draft, he was found to have a stress fracture in the navicular bone in his right foot.

Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes notes that that tiny bone in the middle of the foot is essential in proper weight transfer and force absorption during ground impact.

Ball Don't Lie points out that Embiid's injury is similar to what former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming had to endure throughout his career. Yao suffered multiple fractures that would eventually cut his career short. Former Cleveland Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas also missed the better part of three seasons, requiring three separate surgeries on the same bone.

"Our priority remains providing Joel with every opportunity to ensure he has a long and successful NBA career, and as such, these findings cause us to pause and reassess his activities," the Sixers wrote in a statement last month announcing Embiid's setback.
