Philadelphia 76ers NBA News: Sixers’ Embiid Finally Has Surgery, Sixers Release Unusually Detailed Statement
Over a month after the Philadelphia 76ers announced that center Joel Embiid would be having surgery on his troublesome foot, the Cameroon native finally had the procedure done.
"This morning, Joel Embiid underwent bone graft procedure of the navicular bone at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City," Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie said in a released statement.
Hinkie followed that by listing five orthopedic experts that comprised the team of surgeons that did the procedure on the third overall pick of the 2014 draft.
"Everyone involved - our organization, Joel, and his agent Darren Matsubara of Wasserman Media Group - worked diligently to assemble this highly sought after group of professionals. The goal was simple: Provide the best possible care for Joel to maximize his opportunity for a long and successful NBA career."
The Sixers' lengthy statement on the state of their promising, but injury derailed center also included detailed accounts from the team of surgeons.
"Visual inspection suggested good vascularity of the bone," said Associate Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery Dr. Martin O'Malley. "We replaced the two existing screws and performed a bone graft of the site using bone from his hip. We were able to identify that bone's integrity was even better than expected and has been put in a great position to support full recovery."
James Herbert of CBSSports.com opines that the most notable thing with the Sixers' release is the sheer amount of detail they included. The Sixers under the leadership of Hinkie has been known to be tight-lipped about most of their operations, Herbert points out.
"Moving forward, our sports performance staff will work with Joel to guide his return to play and monitor his progress against targeted benchmarks," said Sixers Director of Performance Research and Development Dr. David T. Martin.
"Our team will work with Joel to create the best possible environment for healing so he can achieve his goals."
