The end of the second hour saw Vanessa Ives being killed by her paramour Ethan Chandler. This shocking moment happened after she had fallen prey to the seduction of Dracula. Some fans were convinced that the death of Vanessa could be easily undone, considering Dr. Frankenstein's presence and his ability to defeat human mortality. However, it turned out that Vanessa's death was all part of series creator John Logan's plan.

In a recent interview, Logan discussed how he decided to make "Penny Dreadful" three-season series and how he felt about killing off Vanessa Ives.

"'Penny Dreadful' is about many things, but for me it's always been about one really simple thing, which is a woman's journey of faith--a deeply religious woman who loses her God and then finds him again. I realized that's where the third season was going to head. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God," he said.

He added that death was the only way to save the character from her dark existence.

"It became a sacrifice that she had to enact for the good of mankind. It was a generous act that she did in dying and going to God, as well."
