Showtime Execs Explain Why 'Penny Dreadful' Season 3 Had To Be The Last
Fans of "Penny Dreadful" were disappointed to know that the third season, which featured the death of its lead character Vanessa Ives, was already its last. Recently, Showtime executives shared why everything had to end there.
Showtime Networks President and CEO, David Nevins, and President of Programming, Gary Levine, shared during their executive session with the Television Critics Association (TCA) why their discussions with "Penny Dreadful" creator John Logan about continuing the series did not succeed.
"I think in his mind, it was always three and out. From early on, we were trying to keep it open for the possibility of more, but it just became clear that trying to continue the show past the life of Vanessa Ives was going to be a lesserment. And John really was most invested in the life of, in the story of Vanessa Ives, and he didn't really want to continue beyond that character," explained Nevins, via Slash Film.
He went on to explain that Vanessa Ives only had a three season arc, so trying to go beyond season 3 would be foolhardy.
Levine also added that the network tried to come up with other approaches to extend the series to a fourth season, but they ultimately agreed that it would be better to end it as intended than force it to stretch beyond.
"I think in John's mind, he slowly came around to the idea that at first thinking there could be life for the series beyond Vanessa Ives, and then he came around to the idea that for him there wasn't," he said.
