'Payday 2' Game News: Developer Overkill Adds Microtransactions & Removes Mods
'Payday 2' has been a major success since its initial release back in August of 2013, but new reports are claiming developer Overkill is changing the game in some seriously unpopular ways. First and foremost, 'Payday 2' players should expect to see some microtransactions that aren't cosmetic only.
This addition to the game may come across as alarming, as a producer for the game, Alamir, posted on the Steam Forums back in 2013, "that PAYDAY 2 will have no micro-transactions whatsoever."
This week a new "Sputnik Safe" item was introduced into the game which went back on that promise. The new item is a lockbox or chest style item that contains skins, which sounds great at face value, if they were strictly cosmetic. However, the skins offered in the lockbox give an advantage over other players as they offer increased stats, like Stability +4.
This is seriously against the grain in terms off offering items like this in games where stat points make a huge difference. Imagine 'CS: GO' players with skins that increase the damage done with an AWP shot, or a Mordekaiser skin that gives +100 HP.
Clearly that are some boundaries that developers do not want to cross with regards to pay-for content in their games, however, this time around, Overkill's sentiments about it have changed.
Moving onto another matter that is sure to annoy some 'Payday 2' players, mod removal. Recently, Overkill "removed the LUA hooks for mods, killing off all mods [...] that add free skins." While this makes sense with the new introduction of the "Sputnik Safe," it still leaves some gamers up in arms. Additionally, popular mod GoonMod, has also been rendered unusable.
All of these new developments have left some gamers uneasy about the future of 'Payday 2', however, it's still up in the air whether or not Overkill will take the new micro-transactions one step further.
