'Parks and Recreation' Cast News: Amy Poehler Honors Late Harris Wittels at Unite4:Good Event

Comedian and actress Amy Poehler brought a somber yet enjoyable tone to Unite4:Good humanity's gala Thursday night as she had recently heard of writer and co-executive producer of Parks and Recreation Harris Wittels' death.

"Today, I lost a friend," she said.

According to the Los Angeles police, Whittles was found dead on a couch by his assistant Thursday, February 19, at around noon. Drug substances were found around the house but death from a drug overdose has yet to be confirmed by the police. Whittles had been struggling with addiction for a long time as he has been open about the addition struggles and had gone to rehab twice in the past.

Along with helping with Parks and Recreation, Whittles also wrote for shows The Sarah Silverman Program and Eastbound and Down. He is known for starting the phrase "Humblebrag," which went viral over various social media sites and was made into a coffee table book, according to TMZ.

Many celebrities, along with Amy Poehler, shared their condolences over the passing of Whittels throughout the Internet. Sarah Silverman on her Twitter account said, "You should know that Harris was brilliant beyond compare. That his imagination was without limit. That he loved comedy more than anything."

Poehler was at the Unite4: charity event to receive honors for her work with the Worldwide Orphan Organization. She said to guests, "I'm sharing it with you because life and death live so close together, and we walk that fine line every day, When things happen in our lives, we turn to the people that we love and we look to our community and our family for support, and we lean on people, in a hope that we will ease our pain."

Parks and Recreation is in its final season and airs on Tuesdays at 8/7C on NBC.
