Carolina Panthers NFL 2015 News: Panthers Wide Receiver Kelvin Benjamin Out for Season with Torn ACL

The Carolina Panthers' promising, young wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin injured his knee during practice Wednesday. Further evaluation revealed a torn ACL, which would lead to him missing the entire 2015 season.

As reported on the team's website, Benjamin suffered the non-contact injury during one-on-one drills.

"Obviously, we feel awful for Kelvin," Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said. "He's worked tremendously hard to put himself in a position to have a strong year. We're confident he will attack his surgery and rehab with the same determination he has met all challenges before.

Benjamin looked posed to have a breakout second year in the league following an impressive rookie season that saw him set the Panthers' rookie record for receptions (73), yards (1,008) and touchdowns (9).

"Sorry to inform I will be missing this season due to ACL tear. I will keep pounding and be the biggest fan this year," Benjamin wrote on Instagram, tagging Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

"He's a heck of a player," Panthers wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. "But the team has done a great job of creating competition in the room. This is one of those instances where that will benefit you."

CBSSports.com notes that without Benjamin, Newton will have to utilize more tight end Greg Olsen, as well as receivers Corey Brown, Ted Ginn, Brenton Bersin, rookie Devin Funchess and Cotchery.

As plenty as those options are, they would be challenged in trying to match the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Benjamin's output.

According to the report, Benjamin's injury occurred during Wednesday's joint practice with the Miami Dolphins. The NFL tweeted a video showing Benjamin crumpling to the floor after his knee buckled while trying to make a "swim move."

"It's one of those things it could have happened in any drill," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. "Unfortunately, it just happened then."
