'Pacific Rim 3' New Movie News, Rumors: Godzilla to Play Crossover in Upcoming Monster Film?
Director Gareth Edwards took on the heavy-handed responsibility of bringing the giant monster genre back to cinema with 'Godzilla,' as well as director Guillermo Del Toro with 'Pacific Rim.'
While it was agreed that both films were a bit underwhelming for fans, the two movies are both slated for sequels and seem to have some grand plans for themselves in the future.
"I'm writing it now, and it's really going to be great," Edwards said about 'Godzilla 2' to Movie Pilot. "I don't want to go off book and tell you anything that I'm not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We're really stoked."
Edwards plans on expanding the monster mythology in subsequent films by introducing new and strange creatures to the films. Del Toro plans to also adopt this concept by introducing a new kind of technology in his story.
"There was this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using?" Del Toro explained. "And we came up with a really, really interesting idea."
This may prompt the possibility of a crossover between 'Godzilla' and 'Pacific Rim,' bringing a fresh new dynamic to the genre. Del Toro has expressed to be down with the idea.
"So far with the sequel, what we're writing, what we're creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the f**k out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain."
Del Toro is referencing 'Pacific Rim 3' if it ever happens.
