'Pacific Rim 2' Cast News: Jon Boyega Joins Cast As Pentecost's Son
After a series of ups and downs in its production, "Pacific Rim" is finally set to return next year. The return of the popular giant robots vs giant monsters film was confirmed recently by Legendary Pictures.
While the makers of the film have not disclosed much about "Pacific Rim 2" aside from the addition of Jon Boyega in the lead role, Guillermo del Toro's recent hint on the return of Charlie Hunnam serves as a beam of hope for many fans.
In an interview, The Hollywood Reporter asked the director of "Pacific Rim 1" and the producer of "Pacific Rim 2" if the sequel would see the comeback of Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi as Jaeger pilots Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori.
"As a producer, I learned not to declare anything about a movie I'm not directing. I can tell you this--a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back. I leave those communications to Steven DeKnight. He's not only a director, but he's actually a guy I respect and admire and it's his movie," said Del Toro.
He further revealed that Boyega will join the cast as Stacker Pentecost's son. While the director considers Boyega's addition a great move, it is still a mystery for many how the director will justify his entry in the cast, as Pentecost was portrayed as a lone man with his adopted daughter Mako in the prequel.
"The idea for me is that this is a continuation of the great leadership character that was Idris Elba. It's a very different character, but I love the idea of having a main character who is not a white Anglo-Saxon guy," he said.
"Pacific Rim 2" is set to premiere in 2017.
