Oscar Pistorius Latest Sentencing News 2014: New Dec. 9 Hearing, Update on Blade Runner's Prison Life
Oscar Pistorius will face another hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, December 9, related to his new sentence. The double amputee, known as the Blade Runner, made history by participating in the 2012 London Olympics with prosthetic legs.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck on Valentine's Day, 2013, when he shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp dead. However, he has claimed that he shot her by mistake after thinking she was an intruder behind the bathroom door of his house.
The South African athlete has said that crime in the region had made him paranoid, especially for him because he has his prosthetic legs off at night, and that same paranoia contributed greatly to him shooting his girlfriend by mistake that night.
Pistorious had previously been an inspiration to his nation, known for overcoming obstacles, and turning his disability into a strength. Three months after making an historic appearance at the London 2012 Olympics, however, he erased in seconds what he had built for himself, and cast a shadow over his legacy.
On the night in question, model Reeva made a last minute decision to spend the night with her boyfriend. She told her flat mate, she would be returning. Waking up in the middle of the night, Pistorious says he thought an intruder had entered his home, and believing his girlfriend was still in bed, he got up and fired four bullets into the bathroom door where Reeva had been inside. Eventually, he was found guilty of manslaughter.
On that note, and while he remains in Pretoria Kgosi Mampuru prison, Pistorius' family has denied rumors that he is getting special treatment.
The Paralympics gold medalist reportedly plans to form a basketball program for the inmates he befriends behind bars. He is also helping other inmates, who are mostly suffering from tuberculosis, to get in shape again.
The athlete said he is inspired by the personal stories of his fellow inmates whom he said have significantly improved their lives. Inmates like Pistorious, have only one hour to go out and another to do weightlifting. The rest, they have to spend inside their cells.
