Orlando Magic NBA 2015 News, Rumors: Scott Skiles as Frontrunner Head Coaching Job?

The Orlando Magic have a collection of some young intriguing talent, and they may look to a former Magic point guard Scott Skiles to lead that group as their head coach. Yahoo Sports reports that league sources say that the 51-year-old has emerged as the strong frontrunner to be the Magic's next coach.

As Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski points out, Skiles profile fits the outline Magic general manager Rob Hennigan has for his next coach: a successful head coaching resume that includes strong emphasis on upgrading the team's defense and accountability.

In his previous stints as head coach with the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks, Skiles earned a reputation for turning bad teams into competitive squads. The Magic finished 25-57 this past season, but have a young core made of center Nikola Vucevic, guards, Victor Oladipo, and All-Rookie First Team Elfird Payton, as well as restricted free agent Tobias Harris.

It was previously reported that the Magic looked to discuss the job with Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, but according to league sources, the team didn't want to offer draft compensation for a chance to acquire the defensive minded coach. As Wojnarowski notes, the Bulls have been waiting for a team to offer a draft pick to hire Thibodeau.

Orlando fired the coach it started the season with, Jacque Vaughn, back in February and worked the rest of the season with interim coach James Borrego.

Skiles last coached in the league in 2013, when he resigned as the Bucks coach. The Yahoo Sports report notes that since then, he has been living in the Orlando area.

As a coach, Skiles has compiled a 443-433 record in the regular season, and 18-24 in the playoffs. He led the Suns and the Bulls to a conference semifinals appearance during his stint with the team.
