'Orange Is The New Black' Season 3 Episode 11 Recap Spoilers: 'We Can Be Heroes' Episode

In season three episode eleven of Orange is the New Black, viewers get to learn more about Joe Caputo, the captain at Litchfield Correctional facility.

The episode, entitled, "We Can Be Heroes," allows for some sympathizing with Caputo, who has previously been portrayed as an unlikable character.

Even though some negative elements of Caputo's personality come up during the flashbacks of the episode, these same flashbacks completely alter the way his character is perceived.

The first flashback begins with a view of Caputo in high school, where he was one of the popular kids in school.

He was the star of the wrestling team, and respected by his coach, his peers and his girlfriend.

However, his future takes a surprising turn as he volunteers to wrestle with a special needs student, and his shoulder gets dislocated moments after the fight begins.

Next, we see him as he starts his band, and it is doing fairly successful, about to open for a 10 month tour.

However, his girlfriend tells him that he pregnant with his bandmate's baby, as the two had a fling while she and Caputo were on a break, and he volunteers to leave his band and help her raise the baby.

Here begins Caputo's career at Litchfield. After a while, his girlfriend and the baby leave him, as she has reignited her relationship with the baby's father.

Caputo realizes that he has been squandering his opportunities by doing what he thinks is the right thing, even though he has never been asked.

This correlates with the guards at present day Litchfield who ask him to lead their union.
