Oprah Winfrey News: Oprah & ‘Selma’ Director Ava DuVernay to Collaborate on New TV Drama via OWN

Here is some great news for Oprah Winfrey fans. The media baroness, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist will be collaborating again with the critically-acclaimed director Ava DuVernay to work on the TV adaptation of "Queen Sugar," a novel by first-time author Natalie Baszile.

According to Christian Today, the television drama, a joint venture between Oprah and the director of 'Selma,' will air on the former's OWN network.

The story of Natalie Baszile's novel revolves around a city-based woman named Charley who leaves her life in fashionable Los Angeles along with her 11-year-old daughter and moves to Louisiana with a view to claim her right on a sugar cane farm, which she inherits from her father. The upcoming TV drama will show the mother-daughter duo starting lives afresh to rebuild the old farm.

According to reports, Baszile sold the rights to her book on her birthday on June 23 after DuVernay contacted her sometime in October 2014. Later, the author and director met up in Louisiana in November.

It has been reported that DuVernay will write, produce, as well as direct the 'Queen Sugar' series. The TV drama will be her first venture on television. On the other hand, Oprah will be debuting as an actress in 'Queen Sugar' in her own Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) cable channel.

Variety says that Oprah recently discussed the project in an interview with the website. She said, "I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN. The story's themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show."

At the same time, DuVernay too expressed her keenness on the upcoming TV drama project. The 'Selma' director said, "From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history. To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I'm excited about what's in store."

The production of 'Queen Sugar' will commence later this year with help from Discovery Networks.
