OnePlus One Android 5.0 Lollipop Update: Alpha Test ROM Download Launched for Feedback
Techies became ecstatic, as OnePlus One mobile users recently had the chance to download Android 5.0 Lollipop via Alpha ROM and leave feedback for the developers.
In the end, Android will replace the open source Cyanogen OS as the mobile's operating system for the device. OnePlus One announced on their forum that their own custom ROM is in the early stage and therefore it does not contain any extras beyond the original features of AOSP Lollipop.
Although the ROM is still basic, the company plans to improve and customize it in the coming days. In the official release of the custom ROM, OnePlus One will unveil a simple yet flexible ROM with the promise that the users will not have to "settle for anything less."
OnePlus One also encouraged users to read and follow instructions carefully before updating devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Any damage that will result from the update is the owner's responsibility.
They wrote, "Since this is an alpha build with limited testing, please proceed with extreme caution and backup your phone before flashing this build."
The steps to update OnePlus One devices with Android 5.0 Lollipop via ROM were simple for Alpha testers.
Step 1. Check for TWRP recovery in the device. If TWRP is not installed, check Phone Arena for flash recovery. Check also if Google Mobile Services is installed in the handset. If the device has GApps, install it after the ROM is flashed to access Google services.
Step 2. Download "oneplus_community.zip" off their forum and copy the file to your device. Place the Oneplus_community.zip in the TWRP folder.
Step 3. Boot into TWRP recovery by pressing both the volume down and power buttons in your OnePlus One.
Step 4. Save all your files in another device before performing the fourth step. In the recovery interface, go to Wipe and clean the data, cache and Dalvik. This deletes all your files in the OnePlus One.
Step 5. Find the zip you copied to your gadget and confirm to flash the ROM.
Step 6. As the flash is completed, clear the cache and install the GApps. Reboot the device. ROM can now be accessed.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop update is pretty good news, but the user may still encounter a few bugs such as unstable camera, video and Wi-Fi connection. Start up time may take awhile after the first boot and clock may crash from time to time.
According to OnePlus One, the final build for Android 5.0 Lollipop will be available very soon and users are hoping that it would be at the end of the month.
