Finally, the Chinese start-up announced the official launch date of OnePlus 2, which it claimed will be superior to its predecessor in several ways.
The OnePlus 2 promotional matter on the company's website shows includes a VR-based cardboard device, which, in all likelihood will be the medium providing the first glimpse of the upcoming device. In fact, this will be the first time in the history of smartphones that a product launch will happen under a niche platform - virtual reality.
NDTV.com reports that making the announcement in a post titled "OnePlus 2: The World's First Product Launch in VR" on the company's webiste, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei explained that the company wished to break barriers with the launch of the device in a virtual reality event. According to Pei, the launch event will start at 7 p.m. PT on July 27 and will be streamed live around the world.
Pei stated, "A VR launch lets you stand right next to our team and our fans as we unveil our new flagship. You'll be able to look around as you check out the phone in a new way and maybe even find a few hidden Easter eggs. It's a new way of thinking about a product launch. We aren't talking at you; we are talking with you."
At the same time, Pei elucidated that the OnePlus Cardboard has been modified perfectly to fit the OnePlus 2 smartphone and is easy to assemble. Pei suggested that the company will not be making any money with the release of OnePlus Cardboard. He added, "We didn't cut any corners on production, and we're definitely losing money on this. But, we want to share them with everyone."
Meanwhile, the appearance of the OnePlus Cardboard is somewhat akin to Google's Cardboard initiative and the company's offering adds to it somehow. "We applaud Google Cardboard for advancing the dream of bringing VR to homes around the world, but we believe it could be even better. Even more accessible," the OnePlus Cardboard listing noted, adding, "In addition to the Cardboard 2.0 features, we've made a few more improvements."
