OnePlus 2 Launch News: New OnePlus Smartphone Named OnePlus 2, Likely to Arrive in June

OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has finally revealed the name of its eagerly waited successor to the popular OnePlus One handset. The upcoming Android smartphone will be called OnePlus 2.

IB Times reports that similar to the handsets of its business rival Xiaomi Corp., OnePlus also made waves with its marketing strategy. The huge popularity of OnePlus One in various markets, including India, resulted in the disappearance of the inventory as soon as the flash sales were announced.

On Tuesday, OnePlus announced the company's annual Photo Mania contest for 2015 and announced that in addition to getting exclusive previews of the upcoming smartphone from the company, the winner of the competition will also be part of a "secret project" planned for the launch of the OnePlus 2.

Since the announcement makes it necessary for the winner to travel on an all-expenses-paid trip to Hong Kong on or before June 28, on the face of it, the company has given a hint of the timeline of the OnePlus 2 launch. In all probability, the event will take place within three weeks.

The detailed rules of the 2015 Photo Mania contest are available on OnePlus' official forum and it involves taking a picture with a smartphone, uploading it on Instagram, filling out a form available on the forum, and just waiting. One factor that will determine the winner is the number of likes the received by the picture. In addition, the company has a contest for people who prefer video, and it is called 'Your OnePlus Story'.

The announcement made by OnePlus on Tuesday also stated that that the company's own OxygenOS for Android will be its official operating system. The company has confirmed that currently it is working toward rolling out faster upgrades following the launch of OnePlus 2. Nonetheless, OnePlus One users will not be receiving any over-the-air (OTA) upgrades to OxygenOS prior to the launch of the OnePlus 2.

The statement issued by the company said, "We have a small team which means in order to do our best work, we need to focus. This unfortunately means that we won't have an OTA for the community build of OxygenOS we released back in April for the OnePlus One until after the OnePlus 2 release," adding, "We will pick up our pace for updates, especially on the OnePlus 2 as OxygenOS will be the official operating system."
